A badly
coordinated body results in an almost constant abnormal
downward pressure on the spine, hips, knees and feet. In order to
counteract this pressure certain patterns of excessive muscular tension are
often established in an attempt to hold the body up. In trying to alleviate
problems with any of these parts of the body it is essential to consider their
overall relationship to the whole. A better understanding of how the body is
coordinated allows one to prevent the causes of many such problems - or at
least to minimise further damage.
By improving the overall postural tone
of the body such functions as respiration, digestion and elimination are
helped. A contracted or collapsed musculo-skeletal system necessarily
causes excess pressure on and restricted space for all the internal
organs.
Because the Technique also involves the mind and the nervous system, it
is a great aid in being more calm and more focused in all one's
activities.
Typical complaints which have been helped by the Alexander
Technique are:
-
stiff neck & shoulders
-
R.S.I. or work-related upper limb disorder
-
"slipped", "herniated" or "worn" discs
-
general respiratory problems
-
panic attacks
-
low-back pain
-
hip problems
-
angina
-
spastic colon
-
nervous tension
