Although Alexander initially discovered his "technique" in response to a specific need, apart from helping him overcome that difficulty it opened a door into a new world of self-awareness and human potential.  The title of his first book, "Man's Supreme Inheritance" gives some indication of the significance he attached to his work: indeed, he saw it as a potential evolutionary tool waiting to be understood and used. For anyone who is interested in developing their potential as a human being - not so much in terms of outer achievement but more in terms of integrating themselves, the Alexander Technique has a very great deal to offer.

At the beginning, for most people, it is a matter of letting go of excess tension and developing a much needed contact with the physical body.  Gradually one becomes aware of the  influence of habit over our ways of both thinking and moving.  As one's sensitivity develops it becomes possible to see how such higher functions as "decision" and "intention" are intricately connected with our physical state: the inter-relationship between Mind, Body and Emotion starts to become a reality which one can observe and even begin to take responsibility for.

People often ask how long it takes to learn.  This is rather like asking how much can one learn in a life-time.  What we are trying to learn is "process". The concept of "process" is found in many Eastern teachings.  It is a very different approach to living - one in which each moment becomes the focus of one's awareness and attention, both internally and externally.  Such a refinement of sensitivity brings a human being ever closer to the appreciation of life itself, in all its mystery. This is not to say that the Alexander Technique is in itself a "spiritual "path.  It is essentially a "practical" approach to living.  Nevertheless, the connection is there to be made ....... for those who wish to.
