What is the Alexander Technique?

The Alexander Technique is a way of learning how to "co-operate" with the mechanisms Nature has given us to support ourselves against gravity.

Over time many people develop bad habits which interfere with these natural processes and which can be the root-cause of problems which manifest as, for instance, back-ache, stiffness, tension or stress.

Frederick Matthias Alexander (1869-1955) discovered that these processes are affected, positively or adversely, by patterns of thought and that is is possible to use this fact to our advantage - if we learn to use thought in the right way.

Alexander Technique teachers are trained to use their hands to show people how to let go of unnecessary tensions and how to find support in the structures of the body meant for that purpose.

The Alexander Technique is now taught in major Colleges of Music and Drama in Europe and the United States, and thousands of people all over the world have benefited from learning this method.

A course of half-hour lessons with a qualified teacher over a period of a few months is usually sufficient for most people to gain an understanding of how to apply these principles to all their daily activities.
