F Matthias Alexander Technique

About FM Alexander and his discoveries

Who was Alexander?

Frederick Matthias Alexander (1869-1955) was born in Tasmania in 1869. As a young man he pursued a career in the Theatre. Severe vocal and respiratory problems almost forced him to give up his chosen profession, but an absolute determination to find the cause of his difficulty led him to the discovery of certain fundamental truths about human reactivity, co-ordination and movement.

Having overcome his own problems he soon became known for his exceptional vocal technique. It was not long before he began to teach what he had learned to others - initially singers and actors. As his reputation grew, many doctors sent patients with respiratory problems to him. It soon became apparent that his method was of benefit to people in many other ways than for voice/respiration problems: he had discovered a key to resolving many hitherto unexplained complaints that people suffer from and even a new approach to the perennial questions of humanity.

In 1904 he brought his knowledge to London, and in 1931 began to train others to teach his method.
