Notes
1 The reading matter will consist of the four books
by FM, other classics of the AT literature and related
material. Whilst students will be encouraged to read
books in private study time, the allocated time during
class hours will be an important support to this.
2 Talks will provide an opportunity to focus on
Alexander’s terms (use, inhibition, direction, primary
control, end-gaining, doing and non-doing,
means-whereby, faulty sensory appreciation, etc.), and
also to look at the similarities and differences between
AT work and other disciplines.
3 Discussions will allow students to give expression
to some of their insights and discoveries and provide a
useful medium for ascertaining the degree to which they
are assimilating the practical content of the course.
4 The Teaching Modules will cover all the “practical
skills” (chair, table, monkey, hands on back of chair,
respiration, whispered ah, voice, walking, lunge) and
some specialist skills in years 2 and 3 (swimming,
running, other activities) and in year 3 more teaching
skills (working with musicians & other professionals,
presentation skills, code of conduct, running a
practice, professional responsibility and development).
