First lessons and training
John started having Alexander lessons in 1978 to help with a general sense of tension and discomfort which was not helped by yoga or exercise. He soon realised that Alexander work had more to offer than loosening tension and when his circumstances allowed he trained as a teacher from 1981 to 1984. After qualifying he began to have lessons with many of the teachers trained by F M Alexander in the 1930's and '40's, keen to absorb as much knowledge as he could.
From 1985 to 2005 John taught Alexander Technique at the Royal Academy of Music and has continued since then to have an interest in working with performing artists. Together with similarly experienced colleagues he has formed the Performing Self to offer advanced Alexander teaching to performers and professional development courses for Alexander teachers. From 2009 to 2016 he ran a Teacher Training Course in Central London and now runs small post-graduate training classes for teachers.
John's private practice is at the Westminster Alexander Centre in Covent Garden where he sees people from a variety of backgrounds: solicitors, barristers, musicians, actors, and business men and women interested in alleviating back and neck pain, coping better with stress, optimising energy levels, developing mindful awareness and improving performance.
John also teaches at Earthlife in Kew Green.
John teaches in Portugal, Romania and Spain.
